CAPS Season ends with 12-3 loss to E. Chapel Hill HS in first round Of State Playoffs

The #3 Cap 8 seed Caps Baseball Team hosted the Pac 6 #3 seed E. Chapel Hill HS in the opening round of the State 4A East Playoffs and for six innings looked like they were up to the task poised to make it to the second round. The rain and E.CH.HS had something to say about that with E.CH. HS coming out in the 7th after a long rain delay putting 10 spots on the board taking the wind out of the Caps sails. E.CH.HS advances on to the second round with a 12-3 win to play Tri-9 #2 seed Athens Drive.

Starting Pitcher Sr. Brandon Saunders held the strong hitting E.CH.HS team scoreless the first 5 innings with solid pitching and excellent error free defensive effort backing him up. The Caps bats came out swinging with So. Wilson White starting things off in the 1st with a single and scored on Sr. Saunders RBI double, his first of 3 RBI’s on the day. The Caps load the bases on two consecutive walks only to see the threat end on a 3rd out pop out to first base. Scoreless in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings, the Caps score 2 more in the bottom of the 5th inning. Jr. Will Cooper reached first on a single and scored on Sr. Brandon Saunders’s 2nd and 3rd RBI’s off a 2 run home run to deep left center field. In the top of the 6th, E.CH.HS scored their first runs of the day with 2 runs off Saunders with three consecutive hits, who had given up only three prior hits in the first 5 innings. Sr. Saunders settled back in and got the remaining three outs on a fly ball, a pickoff and a big strikeout for the 3rd out stranding a runner at third.  Up 3-2 after 6, the game was temporarily suspended due to rain and lightening. After a long break, the skies finally cleared and the sun came out deciding to shine on E.CH.HS vs. Broughton. Due to a long delay and a cooling arm, So. Joe Bialkowski, took the mound to preserve the lead relieving Sr. Saunders who left the game surrendering only two runs off 6 hits, with 3 walks, 1 HB and 3 strikeouts. The first E.CH.HS batter reached first base on a no man’s land pop up single in short right field that proved to be the beginning of the end for the Caps. With 2 consecutive walks, a single, one strikeout and 2 more walks, losing Pitcher Bialkowski was credited with 6 runs and relieved by Sr. Pierce Jensen. Sr. Jensen picked up outs 2 and 3 but not before surrendering 4 more runs off 3 hits, including a three run HR, one strikeout and no walks. The Caps mounted a threat in the bottom of the 7th refusing to die, loading the bases with one out, before E.CH.HS rolled up a game ending 6-4-3 double play.

This team accomplished a lot and exceeded expectations finishing third in the Cap 8 and battled for first place all year, almost obtaining their preseason goal. A few breaks, and one or two more defensive stops and hits were all that separated this team from realizing their dreams. Congratulations Caps on a GREAT SEASON and good luck for next year.

The Caps get the first batter on base in the bottom of the 4th and Wakefield called on Evan Brabrand to replace Patel on the mound who promptly shut down the Caps the rest of the game. Saunders comes back strong in the 5th holding the wolverines scoreless but the Caps surrender 2 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th to lose the game.

Caps start the final week of the regular season with another conference win over Heritage

The Caps returned home Tuesday to take on a visiting Heritage Team that has challenged opponents all year long and today’s game proved no different. Sr. Pierce Jensen came in the 6th with two outs and got the third out of the inning on a first pitch fly ball. Sr. Jensen answered the bell in the 7th and did what he has done all year in relief and shut down the Heritage last at bat allowing no runs on no hits with 1 walk and a strikeout to end the game.

CAPS finish the week strong with another conference win, handing Enloe a 5-2 loss and hanging tight to 2nd place and a shot at 1st place

The Caps went back on the road Friday after a long night Thursday to N. Davidson and get the job done behind solid performances by starting pitcher Sr. Brandon Saunders (5-1) who picked up his 5th win of the season and lefty So. Joe Bialkowski who came in relief in the sixth to pick up his 4th save of the year. The caps jump out quick scoring 2 runs in the first with So. Joe Biakowski leading things off with a double and was moved over to third on So. Wilson White’s fly ball to center field. Jr. Will Cooper picks up Bialkowski on an RBI single. Running for Cooper, Jr. Will Barfield steels second and is moved over on Sr. Brandon Saunders single and Barfield scored on a double steal with pitch running Jr. Ziquine Hopkins taking second. Sr. Saunders took care of the first two batters in the 1st but left an 0-2 fastball up surrendering a solo HR over the center field fence to the number three hitter. That would be all the runs scored off Saunders as he shook off the mistake and settled into a rhythm holding Enloe to just three hits, 6 strikeouts and 1 walk over 5 innings of work. The Caps add three more in the second to take a 5-1 lead. Sr. Kevin Partin led off with a single and was moved over by a well executed sacrifice bunt by So. Max Magallanes. So. CAPS drop a non-conference game to N. Davidson 11-3

The Caps don’t get a win but gain valuable experience making a long road trip and playing before a great crowd against a top tournament team in N. Davidson. Both teams shut each other down in the first inning but the caps woes against non conference foes rears its ugly head again in the second surrendering too many walks followed by untimely extra base hits leading to an early 6 run deficit proving to be too large to overcome. Losing pitcher Sr. Charlie Goode surrendered 6 runs in the 2nd off 3 hits and 3 walks including a grand slam home run by the UNC Asheville bound N. Davidson center fielder, Cody Adkins, before giving way to Sr. Payne Eller who got the next two outs to in the inning. Sr. Kevin Partin reached base on a catcher’s interference and moves over So. Joe Bialkowski’s shot to second base that was not fielded. With runners on 1st and 2nd , Pitcher Sr. Pierce Jensen who entered the game for Eller, picked up a RBI single scoring Partin. Jr. Will Cooper reached first base on a walk and Sr. Saunders scored Bialkowski on a shot to the short stop who couldn’t make the play. Jr. Will Barfield then reached first on a FC bunt that N. Davidson failed to convert loading the bases with two. The threat was ended on a full count strikeout for the third out. Davidson to 1 additional run in the 5th. The Caps go scoreless in the 6th and 7th with Sr. Josh Clark doing the same to N. Davidson in the bottom of 6th allowing no runs on 1 hit, 1 strikeout and 1 base on balls.
