Caps Win Game 1 and  then drop the next 2


The Caps shake off a rusty start and does something it has not done in a while, winning the opening round game in the Bobby Murray Tournament. The Caps pounded out 10 hits and 8 runs off Tennessee bound Connor Stevens and added one more run with 3 hits off reliever Tom Beley. The Caps hit production came from the entire lineup with hits and/or sacrifice fly RBI’s from 8 of the 9 hitting positions, 5 with two or more hits! Behind 2-0 in the 2nd, The Caps get their first hit on a single by leadoff batter, cleanup hitter Sr. Brandon Saunders, and two outs later was moved over on a single by Sr. Josh Clark. Stevens ends the threat with a 3rd out strikeout stranding two. St. David’s pick up 2 more earned runs in the 3rd to go ahead 4-0. The Caps confidence not shaken, the bats respond in the 4th producing 3 runs to get back in the game 4-3 and more importantly sends a message to Stevens they have come to play! Jr. Will Cooper leads off the 4th stroking a Stevens 0-2 mistake deep to left center field for a double. Sr. Saunders squares up a 1-0 pitch but line drives it right at the center fielder. With Steven’s early invincibility erased, Sr. Payne Eller has a great at bat winning the war with a full count RBI single. Sr.’s Josh Clark and Kevin Partin keep it going with back to back RBI singles for the second and third runs of the inning. The Caps hold St. David’s scoreless in the bottom of the 4th and answers the bell in the 5th delivering a 5 run knockout punch. Sr. Pierce Jensen leads off the inning with a single and Jr. W. Cooper gets pitched around for a walk. Sr.’s Saunders and Eller respond with back to back RBI singles, their second hits of the day to pick up 2.  The Caps pick up 2 more runs off Sr. Josh Clarks infield fielder’s choice and a walk to Jr. will Barfield. So. Joe Bialkowski rounded out the scoring driving in the 5th run on a deep sacrifice fly ball to right. The Caps pick up one more in the 6th with Jr. Cooper’s leadoff single, his second hit of the day, and Sr. Saunders third single of the day. St. David’s pick up two unearned runs in the bottom of the 6th off reliever Sr. Pierce Jensen who responded by shutting down the threat  with an inning ending strikeout!

Starting pitcher, Jr. Wilson White, does a good job going 3 innings throwing strikes but no getting many breaks surrendering 4 earned runs on 8 hits, 2 strikeouts, 2 walks with 1 error. Winning Pitcher, Sr. reliever Pierce Jensen, came in the 4th doing an excellent job cooling the St. David’s bats to pick up the win going three innings surrendering two unearned runs on 2 hits, 1 strikeout, 2 walks with one error. So. Joe Bialkowski picked up the save closing out the 7th in convincing fashion surrendering no runs, no hits with 2 strikeouts and one walk.

The Caps were “up to the challenge” in their first game of the day Saturday versus Ragsdale for the first 4 innings taking a 4-3 lead into the top of the 5th but the wheels came completely off with Ragsdale scoring 14 runs in the 5th off of 8 hits and 8 walks. Starting Caps pitcher, Sr. Brandon Saunders, struggled out the gate to find the strike zone surrendering a run in the first and 2 runs in the 2nd but settled down and held Ragsdale scoreless in the 3rd and 4th surrendering 3 runs on 5 hits, 4 strikeouts and 6 walks. The home team Caps responded quickly scoring 2 in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter So. Joe Bialkowski stroked a double and scored off Sr. Brandon Saunders RBI double. Sr. Josh Clark, stoked a 2 strike single scoring Saunders. The Caps take the 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 3rd getting two more runs from the top of the lineup. So. Bialkowski led the inning off with a single, stole second base and scored on So. Wilson White’s RBI double. Sr. Saunders picked up his second hit and RBI of the day with a single up the middle scoring So. White. Sr. Josh Clark got the call in the 5th to preserve the 4-3 lead but it was not to be, surrendering 8 runs on 4 walks and 4 hits in 1/3 inning of work picking up the loss. With one out in the 5th, the Caps went to So. Joe Bialkowski to stop the bleeding but Ragsdale kept the pedal down and scored 6 more runs off 4 hits, 3 walks and one strikeout. Jr. Will Barfield collected the third out in the 5th to stop the bleeding surrendering no runs on 1 walk and 1 strikeout. The Caps answer in the bottom of the 5th with more fight but can not manage enough runs to keep the game going. Jr. Will Barfield led things off with double to deep left field and scored on So. Wilson Whites 2nd hit, a single, for his 2nd RBI and the last run of the game.

The Caps out hit Person, 9 hits to 5, but can not overcome an early 8 run deficient in the first two innings off losing pitcher Charlie Goode who surrendered 6 runs in the 1st and 2 runs in 1/3 of the second inning off a combined 3 hits, 6 walks and no strikeouts. Sr. Pierce Jensen took over for the ailing Goode and shut down Person the rest of the way with an exceptional relief performance allowing only two hits, striking out 6 and giving up only three free bases. The Person pitching staff spread out the 9 Caps hits limiting the Caps scoring to 1 in the 2nd and 3 in the 5th. Sr. Tanner Parker got things started in the second wearing yet another pitch to reach first stole second and scored on Sr. Kevin Partin’s deep right center RBI double. Scoreless in the 3rd and 4th, So. Wilson White worked the count for a walk and scored on Jr. Will Coopers RBI double to the right field corner. Sr. Brandon Saunders cleared the bases with an RBI triple to the wall in right center and scored on Sr. Josh Clark’s RBI single. Person works out of a jam in the 6th and shuts down the Caps in the Top of the 7th   1, 2, 3 to end the game.
