Caps Let One Get Away Loosing 4-3 on the Road Against Leesville Road
The Caps take a trip to Leesville High School for a big battle to decide 2nd place in the Cap 8 Conference race and leave asking “what if”? The game featured head to head battle of undefeated pitchers, 5-0 Sr. Ben Duncan of Leesville and Broughton’s 4-0 Sr. Brandon Saunders, power hitting lineups and speedy base runners. Taking a look at the box score you don’t see much difference between the two teams except the one run delta and the two Caps errors in the third giving Leesville two unearned runs. What if the wind is blowing out like it was earlier in the game, the Jr. Will Cooper’s double to the centerfield fence turns into a 3 run HR knotting the score in the top of the 7th! What if, the 4 through 9 spots, which have been producing a lot of offense the last few weeks, stays hot versus going 0-16. What if? That may the question tonight, but can we? Is not a question this team will take into the rest of the season! They proved to themselves they belong and that they can beat anybody!
The Caps strike first with leadoff hitting So. Smoking Joe Bialkowski scored after stroking one of his 4 hits for a single, moving over on a passed ball and scoring on Jr. Will Cooper’s RBI single to right center. The Caps go scoreless till the 7th. So. Max Magallanes got things going in the 7th with a one out walk and moved over So. Bialkowski’s 4th hit of the day. So. Wilson White hits a fielder’s choice to short, moving over So. Magallanes to third and hustles down the line to stay out of the 6-4-3 double play. With two outs and two on, Jr. Will Cooper lifts a full count fast ball deep center that needed one more foot to get out but was still good enough for a 2 RBI double scoring Magallanes and White to close the gap 4-3. Leesville makes a pitching change relieving WP Ben Duncan with fresh arm Sean Ross who retired Sr. Saunders on a game ending 6-3 grounder.
Losing pitcher, Sr. Brandon Saunders (4-1) had another strong outing and was good enough to win but a few unearned runs on two errors sealed the Caps fate. In his third complete game of this season, Sr. Saunders gave up 4 runs, 1 earned, on 7 hits, 6 strikeouts, one walk while stranding 5. Leesville took the lead with two unearned runs in the 3rd, added another earned run in the 4th and a third unearned insurance run in the 6th for the win.
Broughton leading hitters – J. Bialkowski 4-4 (3-1B, 1 Run); Will Cooper 2-4 (1B, 2B, 0 Runs, 3 RBI’s); Wilson White 1-3 (1-1B, 1 run)
