The Caps’ varsity welcomed Leesville Road to Wiley Warren Field on Wednesday 4/23/14 for a CAP 8 contest.  In the first meeting this season, the Pride took an exciting 13 – 12 victory.  The Caps returned the favor today, scoring 7 runs in the final inning to take the win.

Leesville took a 5 – 1 lead into the 5th inning.  But solid relief pitching from So. Cam Epperson, Sr. Ben Eller and Sr. Rob Case would keep the Caps within striking distance.  The Caps defense also played tough the entire game, throwing out a runner at home, turning 2 double plays, and committing just 1 error.  Sr. rightfielder Jackson Williams lead the defense with 3 putouts and So. leftfielder Will Baldwin made a sparkling defensive play to rob Leesville of an extra-base hit in the 7th inning.

Trailing 7 to 1, the Caps would rally with 2 outs in their final at bat.  Jr. John Woods singled to keep the inning alive.  Jr. Dom Ford and Sr. Ben Sawyer would reach safely on Pride errors.  Sr. Rob Case, Sr. Eric Collins, and Sr. John Baldwin then delivered consecutive singles.  So. Jake Baize reached on another Pride error, knotting the score at 7.  Eller then delivered a single and Baize scored to secure the Caps’ 8 – 7 win!

“To say we were fortunate would be an understatement.  But we had some guys gut it out to stay within striking distance,” commented head coach Harry Jones.  “Eller was a good example of that toughness today.  He was injured early in the game, but would come back to pitch an inning in relief and deliver the game winning hit.  We really battled and hustled to take advantage of Leesville’s mistakes.”

Offensive leaders for the game: Eric Collins (2 – 4, run), John Baldwin (2 – 4, 2B, SB, RBI, 2 runs), Ben Eller (1 – 3, 2 RBI), Cam Epperson (1 – 1) and John Woods (1 – 3, run).

“Today was a solid encore to Wednesday’s complete outing,” noted head coach Harry Jones.  “When you don’t hurt yourself, it makes it awful tough on the guys in the other dugout.”

Offensive leaders for the game: Ben Sawyer (1 – 3, BB, RBI), Eric Collins (2 – 4, 2 RBI), Ben Eller (3 – 4, run), Jake Baize (1 – 3, run) and John Woods (2 – 3, BB, RBI, run).

The Caps’ offense generated 8 hits, 4 walks, and executed 2 sacrifice bunts in downing the Huskies.  The Caps would score single runs in the first and second innings on RBIs from Sr. Ben Sawyer and Sr. Ben Eller, respectively.  The lead was extended in the fourth inning as So. In a home game against Cap 8 foe Enloe on Friday 4/11/14, the Caps’ varsity relied on solid pitching and defense to take a 3 – 1 victory.  “We got an outstanding performance on the mound from Thomas Walden and we backed him with solid defense,” remarked head coach Harry Jones.  “We scraped together just enough offense to get a good win.”

So. Walden pitched a complete game, scattering just 4 hits and surrendering a lone run to the Eagles.  Walden did not walk any Eagles and the defense committed just one error.  The defense turned a nice 5-4-3 double play (Sr. Ben Eller to Sr. Ben Sawyer to Sr. Eric Collins) in the top of the 7th inning to stop any chance of an Eagles rally and end the game.
