In a game reminiscent of their win on Wednesday, the Caps’ varsity used solid pitching and defense to defeat Wake Forest on Thursday 4/17/14.  The Caps produced an error free defensive effort in support of starting pitcher So. Thomas Walden.  Sr. Rob Case recorded 5 putouts in right field and Jr. Dom Ford recorded 4 assists and 1 putout at shortstop to lead the defensive effort.  Meanwhile, Walden scattered 6 hits, notched 3 strikeouts and no walks in a complete game effort.  It was the Caps first shutout of the 2014 season.

The Caps’ offense kept pressure on the home-standing Cougars throughout the game with 12 hits and 5 walks.  It was a 5-run second inning that provided Walden with all the run support he would need.  In the second, So. Will Baldwin, Sr. Ben Eller, So. Jake Baize, Jr. John Woods, and Jr. Dom Ford would deliver consecutive base hits.  Sr. Eric Collins then delivered the big hit of the inning with a 2-out double to drive in 2 runs.  The Caps added an insurance run in the 5th inning on a single by Woods.

“Today was a solid encore to Wednesday’s complete outing,” noted head coach Harry Jones.  “When you don’t hurt yourself, it makes it awful tough on the guys in the other dugout.”

Offensive leaders for the game: Ben Sawyer (1 – 3, BB, RBI), Eric Collins (2 – 4, 2 RBI), Ben Eller (3 – 4, run), Jake Baize (1 – 3, run) and John Woods (2 – 3, BB, RBI, run).

The Caps varsity will be at home against Leesville Road on Wednesday 4/23/14 at 4:30 p.m.  They travel to Millbrook on Friday 4/25/14 for a 7:00 p.m. game.
