The Caps’ varsity traveled to Wake Forest on Wednesday 4/16/14 to play conference rival Heritage. The Caps played perhaps their most complete game of the season to take the 6 – 2 victory. “It all came together today. We had great pitching and some clutch defense. We executed in the small game and got good at bats. I am proud of the way the team responded,” commented head coach Harry Jones.
The Caps’ offense generated 8 hits, 4 walks, and executed 2 sacrifice bunts in downing the Huskies. The Caps would score single runs in the first and second innings on RBIs from Sr. Ben Sawyer and Sr. Ben Eller, respectively. The lead was extended in the fourth inning as So. Jake Baize, Sr. John Baldwin, and Eller would score in the inning. RBIs were delivered in the inning by Eller, Sr. Jackson Williams, and Jr. John Woods. The Caps added an insurance run in the sixth inning as Baldwin scored his third run of the game on a single by Eller, his third RBI of the game.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Sr. Ben Sawyer and the Caps’ defense made sure that the Huskies would not rally. Sawyer limited the Huskies to 6 hits, struck out 3 and walked none for the complete game victory. Sr. center fielder John Baldwin had 4 putouts, while Sr. third baseman Ben Eller and Sr. shortstop Rob Case each had 3 assists. In the third inning, a mini-rally by the Huskies was snuffed out by sparkling defensive plays from So. second baseman Will Baldwin and Sr. right fielder Jackson Williams.
