CAPS finish the week strong with another conference win, handing Enloe a 5-2 loss and hanging tight to 2nd place and a shot at 1st place

The Caps went back on the road Friday after a long night Thursday to N. Davidson and get the job done behind solid performances by starting pitcher Sr. Brandon Saunders (5-1) who picked up his 5th win of the season and lefty So. Joe Bialkowski who came in relief in the sixth to pick up his 4th save of the year. The caps jump out quick scoring 2 runs in the first with So. Joe Biakowski leading things off with a double and was moved over to third on So. Wilson White’s fly ball to center field. Jr. Will Cooper picks up Bialkowski on an RBI single. Running for Cooper, Jr. Will Barfield steels second and is moved over on Sr. Brandon Saunders single and Barfield scored on a double steal with pitch running Jr. Ziquine Hopkins taking second. Sr. Saunders took care of the first two batters in the 1st but left an 0-2 fastball up surrendering a solo HR over the center field fence to the number three hitter. That would be all the runs scored off Saunders as he shook off the mistake and settled into a rhythm holding Enloe to just three hits, 6 strikeouts and 1 walk over 5 innings of work. The Caps add three more in the second to take a 5-1 lead. Sr. Kevin Partin led off with a single and was moved over by a well executed sacrifice bunt by So. Max Magallanes. So. Joe Biakowski picked up his second hit of the day moving over Partin and stole second allowing Partin to score on the throw thru. So. Wilson White moves over Bialkowski with a single and steals second opening up first base to walk Jr. Cooper to load the bases. Sr. Brandon Saunders stroked a full count fast ball that was tracking for a grand slam but was caught at the center field fence scoring two with a sacrifice fly. Enloe’s Andrew Dorey, for a second time this year settles in and shuts down the Capitals bats the rest of the way with a good combination of off speed pitches. The 5 runs proved all that the Caps needed to win however as So. Joe Bialkowski continued his impressive cleanup duties holding Enloe to just one run over the last two innings on just two hits, one a solo HR to center fielder Kendell White, gave up 0 walks and 3 strikeouts. The Caps pitching combined for an impressive 9 strikeouts with just 1 walk while giving up only 5 hits.

CAPS drop a non-conference game to N. Davidson 11-3

The Caps don’t get a win but gain valuable experience making a long road trip and playing before a great crowd against a top tournament team in N. Davidson. Both teams shut each other down in the first inning but the caps woes against non conference foes rears its ugly head again in the second surrendering too many walks followed by untimely extra base hits leading to an early 6 run deficit proving to be too large to overcome. Losing pitcher Sr. Charlie Goode surrendered 6 runs in the 2nd off 3 hits and 3 walks including a grand slam home run by the UNC Asheville bound N. Davidson center fielder, Cody Adkins, before giving way to Sr. Payne Eller who got the next two outs to in the inning. The Caps followed a scoreless 2nd with a scoreless 3rd .  Sr. Payne Eller kept the N. Davidson bats at bay surrendering only one in the 3rd . The Caps get on the scoreboard with a run in the 4th with a lead off single by Sr. Brandon Saunders who went to second on a past ball and moved over to third on an Eller Sac Fly. Sr. Tanner Parker picked up his second hit of the night scoring Saunders with a RBI double. N. Davidson heats back scoring 3 more runs in the 4th with 4 consecutive hits off Sr. Eller including a 2 run HR to left center field. Sr. Eller’s 2 1/3 innings of work included 4 runs, 6 hits, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. The Caps pick up 2 more runs in the 5th but strands 3 to kill the momentum. Sr. Kevin Partin reached base on a catcher’s interference and moves over So. Joe Bialkowski’s shot to second base that was not fielded. With runners on 1st and 2nd , Pitcher Sr. Pierce Jensen who entered the game for Eller, picked up a RBI single scoring Partin. Jr. Will Cooper reached first base on a walk and Sr. Saunders scored Bialkowski on a shot to the short stop who couldn’t make the play. Jr. Will Barfield then reached first on a FC bunt that N. Davidson failed to convert loading the bases with two. The threat was ended on a full count strikeout for the third out. Sr. Pierce Jensen in relief of Eller surrendered a lead off solo shot to Adkins, his second HR of the night but did what he has done all year and shut them down the rest of the inning limiting N. Davidson to 1 additional run in the 5th. The Caps go scoreless in the 6th and 7th with Sr. Josh Clark doing the same to N. Davidson in the bottom of 6th allowing no runs on 1 hit, 1 strikeout and 1 base on balls.
