Caps Drop Extra Inning Game at Wakefield.
Starting pitcher Thomas Walden threw well for 3 & 2/3 innings before the game was suspended to lightening. In the Caps second, John Woods (Sr.), Will Baldwin (Jr.) and Noah Yarborough (Sr.) all singled before Kyle Ehlers (Fr.) had a hard grounder to score Baldwin to cut the Wolverines lead to 2-1. After a 1-2-3 inning, Dom Ford (Sr.) hustled to beat out an infield single, Elias Kuhns (Soph.) walked and Ford scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Woods to tie the score at 2. Wakefield scored 2 in the 3rd to regain the lead. Short stop Ford made an ESPN Top-Ten leaping grab on a liner in the 4th but Broughton allowed a run before the game was suspended with 2 outs and 2 strikes on a Wakefield batter with Broughton trailing 5-2.
The next afternoon, Baldwin took to the mound and was able to throw one pitch for a strikeout to end the inning. In the Caps 5th, Mathis Dean (Fr.) reached on an error, Ford followed with a fielder’s choice then stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on an RBI groundout by Kuhns. Cam Epperson (Jr.) followed with one of the best hits of the game, a double down the right field line but was left stranded. Baldwin had a four-pitch inning in the 5th. After a scoreless 6th, the Caps were down to their final at-bat trailing by 2. Kuhns started the inning with a walk followed by a single by Woods. Kuhns was able to score on a RBI groundout by Baldwin then with two outs, Yarborough connected on a clutch double over the left fielder to plate Woods and tie the game at 5. In extra innings, the Caps played excellent team defense, had several base runners, but couldn’t get a run across the plate. Wakefield ended the game by scoring a run on a deep ball to left. Final Score; 6-5. Yarborough and Woods lead Broughton with 2 hits each and Ford scored twice.

Caps Drop Non-Conference Game to Apex
Apex jumped out to a 1-0 lead after 1. The Caps threatened in the second with singles by Noah Yarborough (Sr.) and Mathis Dean (Fr.) but left the bases loaded. The Cougars scored 5 in the second and one in the third to go up 7-0. The Caps played good defense in the middle innings with senior catcher John Woods throwing out a base stealer, Will Baldwin (Jr.) gunned down a runner at the plate from second base, Will Collins (Jr.) took a throw from senior shortstop Dom Ford to pick off a runner at second, and Ford and Collins teamed for a 6-4-3 double play. The Caps scored three in the 5th to cut the lead to 8-3. Warren Grady (Soph), Ford, and Elias Kuhns (Soph) all walked before Woods delivered with a sacrifice fly to right allowing Grady to tag from third. Baldwin was hit by a pitch (2nd of game) then Yarborough delivered a big 2 RBI single to plate Ford and Kuhns. Thomas Walden (Jr.) collected his second hit of the game in the 6th and scored on an error to make the score 11-4.

Spartans Defeat Caps
Sanderson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Caps threatened in the bottom of the second when second baseman Will Baldwin (Jr.) reached on an error and moved to third on a nice hit and run by third baseman Kyle Ehlers )Fr). Left fielder Dylan Lamm (Jr.) walked to load the bases but the Caps stranded three runners. The Spartans added a two-run homer before Broughton senior shortstop Dom Ford connected on a solo home run in the 3rd. Ford and second baseman Will Collins (Jr.) had a nice 6-4-3 double play in the fifth. Noah Yarborough (Sr.) added a single in the 6th. Sanderson completed the scoring with a three-run homer by a UNC-Wilmington recruit to complete the scoring, 10-1.
The Caps look to get on track with three games this week. Next game: Monday, April 6th, 5:00 at Apex.
Caps Lose Close One
Broughton played well but came up short in a 3-0 loss to the Millbrook Wildcats, overshadowing a brilliant pitching performance by junior Thomas Walden. Millbrook scored all of their runs in the bottom of the 1st on a couple of errors and three hits. Walden silenced the Millbrook bats the rest of the way and finished with a complete game four-hitter. Defensive highlights included two double plays and throwing out a runner at third and at home. Shortstop Dom Ford (Sr.) and second baseman Kyle Ehlers (Fr.) teamed up on a 6-4-3 double play in the first; catcher John Woods (Sr.) threw to third baseman Eli Dejesus (Jr.) to tag out a Wildcat trying to steal in the third; and in the 5th Walden fielded a slow grounder and tossed to second baseman Will Collins (Jr.) who was covering first. Collins then threw a bullet home to Woods for the tag. Will Baldwin (Jr.) lead the Caps’ offense with two hits.

Caps Struggle at Bobby Murray Tournament
Broughton lost 11-0 to a very good Wake County Home School team. Warren Grady (Soph.) and Thomas Walden (Jr.) each had a single. Jacob McCaslin (Jr.) pitched well in relief.
After Friday rainouts, Broughton faced back-to-back games Saturday against two of Wake County’s perennial powers – Green Hope and Middle Creek. Green Hope’s pitcher, a UNC-W signee, proved too much for the Caps as the Falcons defeated Broughton 13-1. Senior Noah Yarborough had a nice diving catch in right field. Cam Epperson (Jr.) pitched in relief and had a couple of solid innings on the mound.
After two games with little offense and shaky defense, the Caps played well in dropping a close game to Middle Creek, 2-0, just giving up one earned run on three hits. Warren Grady (Soph.) kept the Mustangs bats in check with 5 strong innings. Will Baldwin (Jr.) pitched a 1-2-3 6th to hold the Mustangs but the Caps came up empty in the top of the 7th. Yarborough, Baldwin and Mathis Dean (Fr.) had singles for the Caps. Congratulations to Will Baldwin for making the All Tournament Team.

Leesville Blanks Caps
The Caps lost their conference home opener 11-0 to a hot hitting/strong pitching Leesville team that features three NCSU signees. Lowlights: many. Highlights: Elias Kuhns (Soph.) broke up the no-hitter with a single to RF in the 3rd, Cam Epperson (Jr.) pitched well in relief, Kyle Ehlers (Fr.) made a nice play to throw out a runner at the plate, Epperson followed up a foul ball over the fence with a single, Sherrod McKoy (Jr.) made a couple of good catches in CF, and SS Dom Ford (Sr.) made a nice double play in the 5th.
Next game: Bobby Murray Tournament March 26th at Millbrook. Time – TBD.

Caps Take Conference Opener
Strong pitching by Thomas Walden (Jr.), solid defense and live bats propelled the Caps to a 10-5 victory at Wake Forest. The score was 0-0 after 1 when senior catcher John Woods got things going with a single. Will Baldwin (Jr.) walked then 1st baseman Noah Yarborough (Sr.) smoked one into right that got passed the right fielder allowing sophomore Elias Kuhns (pinch running for Woods) and Baldwin to score to make it 2-0 Caps. Freshman Kyle Ehlers then had a ground out RBI scoring Yarborough to make it 3-0 Caps.
After holding the Cougars scoreless in the bottom of the second, senior Dom Ford led off the 3rd with a walk, Woods walked and both players advanced on a ground out by junior 3rd baseman Cam Epperson. Baldwin followed with a two-out single to CF driving in Ford and pinch runner Kuhns to make it 5-0 Caps. In the bottom of the 4th, Wake Forest was able to load the bases before getting a sacrifice fly to plate their first fun. Ford made a nice play in the hole at SS and Yarborough saved a couple of runs by making a nice pick at first to end the inning with Caps leading 5-1 after 4.
In the top of the 4th, Ford reached second on an error and made it to third on a wild pitch. Soph. Warren Grady then laid down a nice RBI bunt to plate Ford. Epperson followed with a RBI double to the fence scoring Grady, then Baldwin had an RBI bunt to score Epperson making it 8-1. Pinch runner Kuhns scored on a wild pitch and Baldwin scored on a RBI single up the middle by Ehlers. Walden singled but both runners were left on base. 10-1 Caps. Wake Forest hit a solo HR in the 5th to make it 10-2. Walden completed his solid pitching by going 1-2-3 in the 6th. Baldwin came in to close, allowed 3 runs before striking out the final batter to seal the victory.

Caps down 3-2 when rain suspended play.
Dom Ford got things going with two put outs in the top of the 1st and in the Caps first at bat, Ford hit a deep shot to right that was misplayed. Grady had a sacrifice bunt and Ford scored on a RBI single by Cam Epperson. In the bottom of the 2nd Walden singled up the middle and scored on a double by Ford to make it 2-0 Caps. After Grady shut out the Trojans in the top of the 3rd, Epperson doubled, followed by singles from Woods and Baldwin but the Caps left the bases loaded in the 3rd. Garner’s bats woke up in the top of the 4th to plate 3 runs. Will Collins (Jr.) came in to pitch the final out of the 4th, a three-pitch strikeout. Garner held the Caps scoreless in the bottom of the 4th. Collins went back to pitch the 5th and that’s when the raindrops started to fall. Game was suspended and will be completed at a later date.

Caps fall 2-1 to Athens Drive in a non-conference game
Noah Yarborough lead the offense with two hits, John Woods (Sr.) had a long single and Thomas Walden (Jr.) connected on a sacrifice fly for the Caps only run.
Broughton hosts Garner today at 4:30 Wiley Warren Field.
JV Update
The JV won their Home Opener 9-4 vs Athens Drive. Chris Vinson had a bases loaded triple to jump out to a 6-3 lead. Harrison Hemric was 2-4. Walker Dixon got the win out of the bullpen.
