Caps Drop Extra Inning Game at Wakefield.
Starting pitcher Thomas Walden threw well for 3 & 2/3 innings before the game was suspended to lightening. In the Caps second, John Woods (Sr.), Will Baldwin (Jr.) and Noah Yarborough (Sr.) all singled before Kyle Ehlers (Fr.) had a hard grounder to score Baldwin to cut the Wolverines lead to 2-1. After a 1-2-3 inning, Dom Ford (Sr.) hustled to beat out an infield single, Elias Kuhns (Soph.) walked and Ford scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Woods to tie the score at 2. Wakefield scored 2 in the 3rd to regain the lead. Short stop Ford made an ESPN Top-Ten leaping grab on a liner in the 4th but Broughton allowed a run before the game was suspended with 2 outs and 2 strikes on a Wakefield batter with Broughton trailing 5-2.
The next afternoon, Baldwin took to the mound and was able to throw one pitch for a strikeout to end the inning. In the Caps 5th, Mathis Dean (Fr.) reached on an error, Ford followed with a fielder’s choice then stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on an RBI groundout by Kuhns. Cam Epperson (Jr.) followed with one of the best hits of the game, a double down the right field line but was left stranded. Baldwin had a four-pitch inning in the 5th. After a scoreless 6th, the Caps were down to their final at-bat trailing by 2. Kuhns started the inning with a walk followed by a single by Woods. Kuhns was able to score on a RBI groundout by Baldwin then with two outs, Yarborough connected on a clutch double over the left fielder to plate Woods and tie the game at 5. In extra innings, the Caps played excellent team defense, had several base runners, but couldn’t get a run across the plate. Wakefield ended the game by scoring a run on a deep ball to left. Final Score; 6-5. Yarborough and Woods lead Broughton with 2 hits each and Ford scored twice.
