Caps Win Streak at Three

Broughton easily defeated Enloe 20-6 on Senior Day when the Caps honored three – Dom Ford, John Woods and Noah Yarborough.  The Eagles had three singles and took advantage of several Broughton errors to score 5 runs in their first a bat.  Broughton answered by scoring 6 in the bottom of the first.  John Woods walked to set the Broughton career record and reached third on a double by Will Baldwin (Jr.).  Yarborough smoked a ball off the third baseman’s glove to score pinch runner Warren Grady (Soph.) and Baldwin.  Yarborough then scored on an error, Elias Kuhns (Soph.) walked and Mathis Dean (Fr.) was hit by a pitch, left fielder Dylan Lamm (Jr.) delivered a RBI single to score Kuhns, Will Collins (Jr.) walked and Ford’s single knocked in Dean and Lamm for a 6-5 Caps’ lead.  Enloe tied the score in the top of the 3rd.

Dean lead off the 3rd with a double and Lamm a nice bunt hit.  Both would later score.  With the bases loaded, Baldwin was HBP scoring Collins, Yarborough was interfered with by the catcher to score Grady, who was running for Woods, then Cam Epperson (Jr.) delivered a bases clearing three RBI triple down the right field line to make it 12-6.  Kuhns continued swinging his hot bat and singled to score Epperson then Lamm collected his third hit of the game by doubling in Kuhns to make it 14-6.  In the 4th: Ford singled and stole second, Woods had a RBI single, Baldwin was HBP again, Epperson singled to load the bases, Kuhns delivered again with a two RBI double, Sam Thompson (Jr.) walked to load the bases, Epperson scored on a wild pitch, George House (Jr.) had a nice RBI single, Eli DeJesus walked, and Ford knocked in Thompson to score the final run.  Highlights: all 16 Caps saw the field, Lamm had 3 hits, Kuhns and Epperson 3 RBI’s each, Woods walked 3 times to become the career walk leader and Epperson had a crowd-pleasing slide into third.  Another highlight had to be the bench-clearing welcome to greet House after his hit.  A great day to be able to honor the seniors – Dom, John and Noah, with a VICTORY!

Caps defeat Wolverines 11-3

Strong pitching, solid defense and timely hitting make for a Caps victory over Wakefield. Noah Yarborough (Sr.) pitched six strong innings scattering 7 hits, and Will Baldwin (Jr.) pitched a scoreless 7th inning. Wakefield scored two in the top of the 1st and Broughton sent 11 batters to the plate and scored 5 runs in the bottom. Dom Ford (Sr.) and John Woods (Sr.) both walked. Baldwin followed with a single to load the bases then Yarborough delivered with a single driving in Ford and pinch runner Warren Grady (Soph.) to tie the game. Baldwin scored on a bases loaded walk, followed by pinch runner Jacob McCaslin who scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Dylan Lamm (Jr.), and Cam Epperson (Jr.) scored the 5th run as Ford walked for the second time in the inning.

In the second inning, Baldwin scored after a Yarborough sacrifice bunt and two wild pitches, Epperson had a stolen base, Mathis Dean (Fr.) singled, and Epperson scored on a pass ball to make it 7-2 Caps. Then a baseball rarity occurred – the Wakefield pitcher went to the wind up and Elias Kuhns (Soph.) stole home on a bang-bang play. 8-2 Caps. In the bottom of the 3rd, Woods singled, Yarborough and Epperson walked, then Kuhns delivered a deep 2 RBI double scoring pinch runners Grady and McCaslin for the second time each. 10-2 Caps. Then you knew it was Broughton’s day. The newly dedicated backstop delivered the assist a fortuitous bounce right back to catcher Woods stopped a Wolverine score. The Caps final run came in the 5th when Ford scored on another RBI single by Woods.

Caps Defeat Cougars

Solid pitching and strong defense paved the way for a 7-5 Broughton victory over Wake Forest.  The Caps took a 2-0 lead in the first on doubles by Dom Ford (Sr.) and Elias Kuhns (Soph.).  Pinch runner Warren Grady (Soph.) scored the first run and Kuhns collected a RBI as Noah Yarborough (Sr.) scored.   The Cougars tied the game in the second.  In the 3rd, John Woods (Sr.) reached on an error and pinch runner Grady scored his second run of the day to make it 3-2 Caps.  In the bottom of the 4th, Kuhns scored on a RBI double by first-baseman Mathis Dean (Fr.),  Dean came around to score on a RBI single by second baseman Will Collins (Jr.) to make it 5-2.  Woods followed with a single to knock in Ford; Yarborough singled to load the bases and third baseman Cam Epperson (Jr.) walked to bring home a run making it 7-2 Caps.  After a solo shot by a Cougar, the Caps missed a scoring opportunity by leaving the bases loaded in the 5th.  In the last inning, Wake Forest was able to string together several hits to plate two runs before Broughton made the final out for a 7-5 victory.  Interesting fact: 4 Caps were hit by pitches.  Kuhns led the offense with two hits.  Collins, Dean, Epperson, Ford, Woods and Yarborough each had a hit.  Highlights: complete game 6-hitter by Thomas Walden (Jr.), nice catch behind the plate by catcher Woods and great and timely diving catch by left fielder Dylan Lamm in the 7th.

Caps Fall to Spartans 7-1

Broughton took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by short stop Dom Ford and a run scoring single by center fielder Will Baldwin.  The Caps played solid defense the entire game, especially in the bottom of the 3rd when Thomas Walden made a beautiful diving catch in deep left field to rob an extra base hit.  That catch was followed by pitcher Cam Epperson charging hard to field a swinging bunt bare-handed to throw out the runner at first.  Later in the game Mathis Dean and Ford combined on a rare 1-6-1 double play.  (ground ball to the first baseman who throws to second for the force out then back to first to get the batter.)  The Caps stranded several runners on base as Sanderson pulled away late in the game.  Will Baldwin lead the offense with two hits and the RBI; Dean, Ford and Kuhns each had a hit.

Broughton Falls to Millbrook in Extra Innings

Millbrook jumped out to an early lead and led 4-0 lead after 4.5.  In the bottom of the 5th, Elias Kuhns (Soph.) singled and scored on an RBI double by Dom Ford (Sr.) to score the Caps first run.  Will Baldwin (Jr.) followed with an RBI single scoring Ford to cut the lead to 4-2.
After holding the Wildcats scoreless in the 6th and 7th, Broughton was down to its final at bat with Millbrook bringing in their ace pitcher to close the game.  Warren Grady (Soph.) worked a walk.  Ford singled and senior catcher John Woods walked to load the bases with no outs.  Noah Yarborough (Sr.) delivered the big hit with a 2 RBI single.  Ford easily scored and Woods made a beautiful head-first slide to elude the catcher to knot the game at 4.  The Caps had two chances to bring in the winning run at 3rd but was unable sending the game into extra innings.  After a scoreless 8th, Millbrook was able to string together a couple of hits to take an 8-4 lead.  The Caps had one last chance.  Woods reached on an error and pinch runner Kyle Ehlers (Fr.) was able to race home on Cam Epperson’s (Jr.) second double of the afternoon.  Final score in 9: Millbrook 8, Broughton 5.  The Caps stranded 9 runners on base.  Epperson, Ford and Yarborough lead the offense with two hits; Baldwin, Mathis Dean (Fr.), Grady, Kuhns, and Dylan Lamm (Jr.) each had a hit.

Next game: Tuesday, April 28th , 7:00 @ Sanderson.

Holly Springs defeats Caps

Broughton dropped a non-conference game to the number 8-ranked Holly Springs 14-5.  Broughton jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a double by short stop Dom Ford (Sr.) and an RBI single by center fielder Will Baldwin (Jr.) but the Hawks put six on the board in their half of the 1st.  The Broughton defense had a nice 6-4-3 double play by Ford and second baseman Will Collins (Jr.) in the second and outfielders Dylan Lamm (Jr.), Baldwin, and Thomas Walden (Jr.) all had nice catches on a breezy day.  In the 3rd, the Caps had back to back singles by catcher John Woods (Sr.) and Baldwin.  Elias Kuhns (Soph.) pinch ran for Woods and was able to score on a hard hit ball by Lamm making the score 6-2 after 3.  The Caps rally continued in the 4th when Collins collected his second single of the game, Ford connected on his second double and Woods walked to load the bases.  Baldwin reached on a hard hit ball off the first baseman, scoring a run.  First baseman Noah Yarborough (Sr.) followed with an RBI single and third baseman Cam Epperson (Jr.) drove in a run by being hit by a pitch.  Score 6-5 Hawks.  Holly Springs followed with a two-run homer and a grand slam to put the game out of reach.  Ford, Baldwin and Collins led the Caps with two hits each, Yarborough, Woods and Walden each had a hit.

The BHS Baseball program is pleased to announce the dedication of their new backstop on April 24th prior to the Millbrook home game (3:45).  This will be a celebration of Judd’s life with all of his friends and family.

Leesville Downs Caps

Broughton lost to conference rival Leesville 11-1.  The Caps only run came in the top of the 6th when Cam Epperson (Jr.) scored on an RBI single by Mathis Dean (Fr.).  The Caps left seven runners on base.  Will Baldwin (Jr.) led the Caps with 2 hits.  Dom Ford (Sr.), Thomas Walden (Jr.) and Dean each had a hit.

Next game: Wednesday, April 22nd , 5:00 @ Holly Springs.

Bat and Ball

Caps Drop Close One to 1st Place Heritage

Thomas Walden (Jr.) pitched a complete game seven-hitter but the Caps could not convert several scoring opportunities, losing 3-1 .  The score was tied 0-0 after the 3rd.  Heritage took a 2-0 lead on a two-out, two-strike bloop hit over the first baseman’s head and scored its final run on a solo shot over the center field fence.  Broughton scored its run when Mathis Dean (Fr.) singled, Dom Ford (Sr.) walked, then Noah Yarborough (Sr.) connected on an RBI single to score Dean.  The Caps stranded five runners over the final three innings.  Broughton played one of its best defensive games on the year – committing no errors and making numerous defensive stops.  Cam Epperson (Jr.) lead the defense with a couple of nice plays at third.  Leading hitters:  Dean and Yarborough had two hits each, Ford and Woods one hit each.

Ages 7-12

Instructors:  Broughton High School Varsity Players, Alumni and Coaches, Experienced Youth Coaches, and Parent Volunteers

Improve your game and skills in a day.  Instruction will involve fielding, throwing, and batting.  Parents must sign an insurance waiver that will be signed at the door.

Registration: 8:00 – 8:30
Camp: 8:30- 12:00

The camp is free.  In the past some have asked to donate.  This year donations will be accepted (but are not required) and all donations will be split between Broughton High School Baseball and the Broughton  High School chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  Checks should be made payable to The Caps Club with “Broughton Baseball” in the memo line.

Enloe Defeats Caps 5-3.

Dom Ford (Sr.) opened the game with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI by catcher John Woods (Sr.)  Enloe scored 3 in the bottom of the first.  The Caps manage to plate a run in the second – Thomas Walden (Jr.) was hit by a pitch and was able to score on a RBI single by Kyle Ehlers (Fr.).  Later in the game pinch runner Will Collins (Jr.) scored to make it 5-3 but the Caps left five runners on base in the final two innings.  Woods lead the team with two hits followed by Ford, Ehlers, Elias Kuhns (Soph.) and Will Baldwin (Jr.) with one hit each.
