Caps Defeat Cougars
Solid pitching and strong defense paved the way for a 7-5 Broughton victory over Wake Forest. The Caps took a 2-0 lead in the first on doubles by Dom Ford (Sr.) and Elias Kuhns (Soph.). Pinch runner Warren Grady (Soph.) scored the first run and Kuhns collected a RBI as Noah Yarborough (Sr.) scored. The Cougars tied the game in the second. In the 3rd, John Woods (Sr.) reached on an error and pinch runner Grady scored his second run of the day to make it 3-2 Caps. In the bottom of the 4th, Kuhns scored on a RBI double by first-baseman Mathis Dean (Fr.), Dean came around to score on a RBI single by second baseman Will Collins (Jr.) to make it 5-2. Woods followed with a single to knock in Ford; Yarborough singled to load the bases and third baseman Cam Epperson (Jr.) walked to bring home a run making it 7-2 Caps. After a solo shot by a Cougar, the Caps missed a scoring opportunity by leaving the bases loaded in the 5th. In the last inning, Wake Forest was able to string together several hits to plate two runs before Broughton made the final out for a 7-5 victory. Interesting fact: 4 Caps were hit by pitches. Kuhns led the offense with two hits. Collins, Dean, Epperson, Ford, Woods and Yarborough each had a hit. Highlights: complete game 6-hitter by Thomas Walden (Jr.), nice catch behind the plate by catcher Woods and great and timely diving catch by left fielder Dylan Lamm in the 7th.
