Mustangs Defeat Caps in Bobby Murray Finale

Broughton’s bats were stymied by a University of Richmond commit in a 10-0 loss to Middle Creek.  The Caps could manage only three hits: singles by Thomas Walden (Sr. RF), and pinch-hitters George House (Sr.) and Will Hensley (Jr.).

The 2016 Bobby Murray Invitational was stacked with some of the area’s best teams. The Caps were winless against three teams ranked in the N&O Top 15.  Broughton enters the second half of the season with ten straight games against conference opponents.  Last year Broughton finished strong so let’s hope for a repeat.  Go Caps!

Next game: Wednesday, April 6th vs. Wakefield @ Broughton @ 4:30.

Caps Drop Doubleheader at Bobby Murray Invitational

The forecast for heavy rains forced game realignments and had Broughton playing back-to-back games against Green Hope and Northwood.

The Green Hope Falcons came out swinging and built an early lead against pitcher Will Baldwin (Sr.) and cruised to an 8-3 win.  Warren Grady (Jr.) came in in relief to pitch the final four innings.  The Broughton bats did not get going until the 6th.  Back-to-back-to-back singles by Kyle Ehlers (Soph. 3B), Dylan Lamm (Sr. RF) and Eli DeJesus (Sr. 2B) loaded the bases.  Thomas Walden (Sr. CF) reached on an error as Ehlers plated the Caps first run, Lamm scored on a ground out and DeJesus scored on an RBI double by Jacob McCaslin (Sr. LF).  Baldwin was hit by a pitch twice (the first ruled as failure to make effort to get out of the way) but was left stranded along with McCaslin.  Lamm and DeJesus got their second hits of the game in the bottom of the 7th but were left on base.

In the second game, the Chargers from Northwood defeated the Caps 5-1, despite an impressive complete game by senior pitcher Thomas Walden.  Walden scattered 5 hits while striking out 8.  Will Baldwin (Sr. SS) got things going with a leadoff single to right center in the 1st but the Caps were unable to score.  In the Caps 2nd, DeJesus singled and was able to come around and score on throwing error.  Broughton was unable to generate any offense after that.  Final line: Broughton, one run off two hits with two errors; Northwood, five runs off five hits with three errors.

Defensive highlights:  Penn Sealey (Fr. C) fought the wind to catch a high fly ball behind home plate, Ehlers made a nice grab at 3rd on a sharp grounder, Lamm a running catch on a deep fly in right, McCaslin a snag in left on a sharply hit ball, Harrison Hemric (Soph. 2B) drifted back to shallow right field to snag a ball, and Walden fielded a bunt by a speedy runner and was able to nail him at 1st.
