Caps Fall to Spartans
Broughton loses to rival Sanderson, 11-3, on a sunny afternoon in North Raleigh. Warren Grady (Jr. CF) and Kyle Ehlers (Soph. 3B) both singled in the 1st but were left stranded. Sanderson was able to score a run in the bottom of the 1st off starting pitcher Will Baldwin. A fielding error allowed the Spartans to tack on another run in the 2nd. Baldwin led off the 3rd with a single to center and Grady doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Matthis Dean (Soph. 1B) was able to hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield scoring Baldwin for the Caps first run. Ehlers followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Grady and tying the score at 2.
Shaky defense in the 3rd allowed the Spartans to pull ahead 5-2, even though the Caps had out hit the Spartans 4-2 at this point. In the 4th, Thomas Walden (Sr. RF) walked and Jacob McCaslin (DH) followed with a single, but the Caps were not able to take advantage. Grady came on to pitch the 4th and McCaslin pitched the 5th and 6th. In the Broughton half of the 6th, Walden walked, McCaslin was hit by a pitch, and Robert Ramseur (Fr. C) reached on an error allowing Walden to score making it 11-3. Whitty Williams (Jr. CF) hustled out an infield hit in the 7th.
Defensive highlight: Drew Wilson (Jr.) made a nice catch in left field on a sinking line drive, saving a run.
The Caps will have a week off to regroup before getting ready for three games in three days at the annual Bobby Murray Invitational.
