Caps started strong, scoring 2 in the bottom of the first.  Soph. Joe Bialkowski walked and was moved over to second by a Sr. Josh Clark sacrifice bunt then Jr. Will “Big Fly” Cooper stroked a 2 run blast to right center (3rd HR of the season).  In the third, Broughton posed another threat with Cooper drawing a walk. Pinch runner, Jr. Ziquine Hopkins, stole second and moved over to third on Sr. Brandon Saunder’s single to right center.   Hopkins was unable to reach home on two infield put outs and Broughton missed a golden opportunity to recapture the lead.

W. Johnston took advantage of the missed opportunity and the Caps only error tying the game 2-2 in the top of the 4th. Starting pitcher Charlie Goode pitched 4 strong innings with 2 strikeouts and three hits giving up 2 unearned runs in the top of the 4th.  Bialkowski took control of the mound for the start of the 5th,  with an excellent performance limiting W. Johnston to just one hit and no runs in 3 innings of work.

Sr. Pierce Jensen got the call to pitch the 8th inning, after surrendered a solo HR to the first batter two additional earned runs scored off a double for a 3 run top of the 8th for W. Johnston. The Caps failing to muster a rally in bottom of the inning ended the game with a losing score of 5-2.

Next game is Monday at East Wake 4:30pm.

Zach Pearce wins the First Annual Trey Cheek Memorial Scholarship

Zach, the son of Robert and Michelle Pearce, exemplifies the qualities that we all strive to achieve.  On and off the field Zach displayed great character with ambitious purposes, a congenial disposition, possessed of good morals, having a high sense of honor and a deep sense of personal responsibility.  Zach is a very talented and smart baseball player.  In the words of Coach Chris Newton “Zach was as fine a catcher as we have had in my 15 years as coach at Broughton.”  As a three year starter Zach managed the pitching staff to multiple playoff wins in each of the last 3 seasons.  Zach will attend ECU next year will tryout as a “walk on” to baseball team.

Zach will be the first of many to honor a great man, husband, father and player, Trey Cheek. Trey a 1990 Broughton graduate was a Raleigh native, a lawyer, a writer of fiction, a baseball player, a golfer and a friend to all who knew him. He was a baseball pitcher at Broughton and was later inducted into Broughton’s Hall of Fame. He was drafted by the New York Mets out of high school and was a pitcher for the UNC-Wilmington baseball team. He was an English major at UNC-W, received his masters in public administration from UNC-Chapel Hill and his Juris Doctor from the UNC School of Law.

Trey’s character and integrity will live on in men like Zach.

Here is Zach Pearce with Trey’s family Tricia Brantley (Sister), Caroline Cheek-Hill (wife), Alex Cheek (father), Preston Cheek (son) and Jackson Cheek (son)

Congratulations to Zach and good luck next year at ECU.

Broughton does not go away quietly but season ends in 6-3 loss to Lee County

Lee County brought their “A” game and it was just too much for the Caps.  The game was dead locked at 1 after 4 innings but Lee County broke out and the Caps had no answer.

Even in the loss I feel this is a Great Victory for the players and coaching staff.  This team has shown character and resilience this season and is to be commended on their effort.

A special Thanks to our Seniors!  Here are their plans for next year.
