Wake Forest, N.C.-  Despite a strong pitching performance by Caps Sophomore Xander Hamilton, Broughton dropped a heartbreaker to Wake Forest 4- 3 on a walk-off single  in the bottom of the seventh Friday night.

Hamilton was a beast on the mound for the Caps, striking out 7 against only 3 walks.  With a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of seventh, Hamilton looked poised to go the distance and pick up the first win of the season for the Caps.  Broughton’s middle infield, however, made two critical errors allowing Wake Forest to get runners at the corners with only one out.  After a walk to load the bases, Wake Forest’s Davis Powell smacked a timely double to drive in two and tie the game at 3.  After a walk to load the bases again, Wake Forest’s Jeff Leary hit a gapper just beyond the diving reach of Broughton’s Shortstop Penn Sealey to win it.

Overall, it was the best effort of the year for the Caps.  Senior Warren Grady collected a pair of hits and an RBI and Sophomore Penn Sealey added a double for an RBI.  Broughton played inspired defense and made very few mistakes until the last inning.  The Caps battled and appeared to be in control of the game going into the seventh- a task even more impressive given that they had faced a tough Wake Forest hurler, Cuyler O’Neill, who struck out nine Caps in just five innings of work.  Overall there were many positives to build on as the Caps enter into conference play.
