The Caps varsity played No. 1 Green Hope on Tuesday 5/13/14 in the first round of the State Playoffs.  A shaky defensive start to the game by the Caps helped the Falcons to a 2-run lead.  Solid defense and pitching by the Falcons would make that lead hold up as the Caps lost 5 – 0.

The Caps’ offense threatened in the first, third and fourth innings but each time the Falcons’ defense responded.  The Caps mustered 4 hits and 2 walks for the game, while the Falcons’ defense turned 2 double-plays to help their cause.

Starting pitcher Sophomore Thomas Walden and relief pitcher Junior Noah Yarborough kept the Caps in striking distance.

Offensive leaders for the game: Dom Ford (1 – 3), Eric Collins (1 – 3, 2B), Jake Baize (1 – 2, BB), and Will Baldwin (1 – 1, SAC).

(Varsity Record: Overall 12 – 13; Conference 6 -8)

Seniors Rob Case and Eric Collins homered for the Caps varsity on Senior Night at Wiley Warren Field.  But their power display was not enough to overcome Heritage’s offense and 7 errors committed by the Caps’ defense.

Case homered in the 1st inning to stake the Caps to an early lead but the visitors scored 5 runs in the 3rd inning to seize the momentum.  Collins responded with his homer in the bottom half of the 3rd inning to briefly stall the Heritage momentum.
But the Caps’ pitching and defense could not hold off Heritage in the final game of the regular season.

Offensive leaders for the game: Dom Ford (2 – 2, 2BB, 2 RBI), Ben Sawyer (1 – 4, 2 RBI), Rob Case (1 – 2, HR, 2 RBI, run), Eric Collins (1 – 2, 2BB, HR, RBI, run), Ben Eller (1 – 3), Jake Baize (1 – 1, 2B, run), John Woods (2 – 2, 2B, RBI, run) and Noah Yarborough (1 – 1, run).
