Broughton Defeats Knightdale 10-4

After falling behind the Knights 4-1, Broughton finished strong by scoring 9 unanswered runs for a 10-4 victory.  Starting pitcher Will Baldwin (Sr.) threw 3 scoreless innings before Knightdale scored 4 in the top of the 4th.  Warren Grady (Jr.) came on in relief to pitch a scoreless 5th and 6th and was able to get 2 outs in the 7th before Jacob McCaslin (Sr.) took the mound with two runners on.  Three strikes later and Broughton had the win.

The Caps took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Cam Epperson (Sr. 3B/1B) lead off with a single to right.  After a nice slide into second for a stolen base, Epperson took third on a wild pitch, Thomas Walden (Sr. OF) walked, Eli DeJesus (Sr. DH) reached on an error scoring Epperson for the first run of the game.  In the Broughton half of the 3rd, Grady singled but was left on base.  The action picked up in the 4th when Mathis Dean (Soph. 1B) singled, Dylan Lamm (Sr. OF) walked on an 11 pitch at bat, Walden laid a nice bunt that was fielded and got by the first basemen allowing Dean and Lamm to score as Walden made it to third.  DeJesus followed with an RBI ground out to plate Walden to tie the score at 4.    In the 5th, Dean and Lamm walked and Walden had an RBI single to score Dean giving the Caps a 5-4 lead.

The Caps blew the game open in the bottom of the 6th.  Harrison Hemric (Soph. 2B) reached on an error, Baldwin doubled to left, and Grady walked to load the bases.  Kyle Ehlers (Soph. 3B) was hit by a pitch, scoring Hemric, Epperson followed with a sacrifice fly to deep right center scoring Baldwin, Lamm followed with an RBI single to score Grady to make it 8-4.  Both Ehlers and Dean scored on a wild pitch as Dean hustled all the way from second to make it 10-4.

Caps Win Season Opener

Broughton began the 2016 season in dramatic fashion with a hard-fought 5-4  come from behind victory over Garner.   Eli DeJesus (Sr./DH) delivered the big blow, a two run walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the 7th.  Thomas Walden (Sr.) was the starting pitcher and pitched 5 solid innings before Warren Grady (Jr.) came on in relief to throw the final two innings.
Shortstop Will Baldwin (Sr.) got the Caps going by hitting the first pitch up the middle for a single.  Baldwin stole second and went to third on a ground-out but was stranded.  In the bottom half of the 2nd, Mathis Dean (Soph./LF) got things started with a walk then stole second.  A nice piece of hitting by Dylan Lamm (Sr./RF) moved the runner over. Thomas Walden followed with an RBI single scoring Dean and tying the game at one.  Garner regained the lead in the 3rd and would have extended their lead if not for a great defensive play by second baseman Harrison Hemric (Soph.) who started a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Baldwin was hit by a pitch and stole second.  Warren Grady delivered an RBI double to center scoring Baldwin.  Grady moved to third and then scored the go ahead run on an RBI single by Lamm.  3-2 Caps after 3.
Garner regained the lead, 4-3, in the 6th.  DeJesus had a sharp single in the bottom half and moved to second but was left stranded.  After Grady held the Trojans scoreless in their final at-bat, Cam Epperson (Sr./1B) walked before a fielder’s choice had the Caps facing their final out.  Lamm and Walden followed with walks to load the bases then DeJesus delivered the big hit.  The Caps played solid defense with all contributing, including Freshman catcher Robert Ramseur who had an excellent game behind the plate.

Next game: Wednesday, March 2nd @ Garner @ 4:00.

The Trey Cheek Memorial Foundation would like to thank all of our sponsors and participants.

The Trey Cheek Memorial Foundation is very thankful to all who supported the 2015 tournament.   We had our largest player turnout and tee sponsors this year. Without the players & sponsors none of the scholarships and support to BHS Baseball would be possible.

Because of the overwhelming success of the tournament, The Trey Cheek Memorial Foundation is able to help launch the Leadership Through Service Pilot Program at Broughton.  This year the program will support 40-50 student athletes as they receive advanced leadership and character training.

After 10 years of success partnering with Crooked Creek we look forward to our new relationship with River Ridge. River Ridge has New Mini Verde Bermuda Greens and the course is at the top of it’s game. Help us to make this the best tournament yet.

Caps Come Up Short

Broughton lost 3-1 to a tough Heritage team in a game where pitching dominated the night for both teams.  The Caps took a 1-0 lead in the third when Dom Ford (Sr.) reached on an error, John Woods (Sr.) singled and Will Baldwin (Jr.) walked to load the bases.  Ford was able to score on a RBI fielder’s choice by Noah Yarborough (Sr.).  The Huskies tied the score at 1 in the bottom of the 3rd and took a 3-1 lead in the 4th.  Relief pitcher Baldwin took the mound in the 4th with Huskies on 1st and 2nd.  One pitch and a nice 6-4-3 double play by Ford and Kyle Ehlers (Fr.) got the Caps out of the inning.  Cam Epperson had a nice double in the 6th.  Broughton left 7 runners on base.  Highlights: solid pitching from Epperson to open the game and great effort and sportsmanship by all players.

Just two weeks ago the Caps sat in last place in a tough baseball conference.  After a strong finish, winning three of the last four, the Caps were able to climb to 5th place.
