Cougars Top Caps

Wake Forest defeated Broughton 5-1 in the second match-up between the Cap 8 schools.  Starting pitcher Thomas Walden (Sr.) threw a complete game 7 hitter but the Caps offense could manage only 3 hits.

Will Baldwin (Sr. CF) lead off the game with a single to left, advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Warren Grady (Soph. DH), and went to 3rd on a fly to right by Mathis Dean (Soph. 1B), but was left stranded.  Wake Forest plated 3 in the 3rd by stringing together a couple of hits and taking advantage of a controversial call at 3rd.  In the Broughton 4th, Dean got the Caps second hit of the day but was left on base.

The Caps were able to get on the board in the 6th.  Robert Ramseur (Fr. C) singled and William Gilchrist (Jr.) came on to pinch run, Baldwin reached on an error and runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd with no outs, Grady grounded out to second scoring Gilchrist, but the inning ended with a runner on 3rd.  The Cougars took advantage of a couple of hits and a couple of Broughton miscues in the bottom of the 6th to tack on two more runs.

Defensive highlight: Kyle Ehlers (Soph. 3B) showed good range by cutting off a ball headed to the hole and getting the runner at 1st.
