The Wake Forest Cougars visited Wiley Warren Field on Friday 3/14/14 and handed the varsity its second extra-inning loss of the season.  The Cougars took advantage of 4 errors by the Caps to steal the 5 – 4 win.  The teams were tied 3 – 3 after 7 innings.  The Cougars scored 2 runs in the top half of the 8th inning.  The Caps scored 1 run in their half of the 8th but were unable to push across the tying run.

“I am proud of the resilience and the fight that we showed late in the game”, commented head coach Harry Jones.  “We got a great effort on the mound from Ben Sawyer today but we couldn’t overcome some sloppy defense.”

The Caps trailed 3 – 1 in the 6th inning but scored twice that inning to tie the score.  Senior Rob Case started the inning with a single, senior Eric Collins followed with a double, and senior Jackson Williams added a long sacrifice fly.  The Caps would strand 8 runners in scoring position during the game, including 4 in the final two innings.

Senior Ben Sawyer scattered 10 hits, issued 1 walk and struck out 2 Cougars in the 8 inning complete game.  Two of the Cougars’ runs were unearned.

Offensive leaders for the game: Ben Sawyer (2 – 4, 2B), Rob Case (2 – 3, BB, 2 Runs), Eric Collins (1 – 4, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 Run), and Jackson Williams (1 – 3, SF, RBI).

The Caps varsity will travel to Leesville Road on Tuesday 3/18/14 and host Millbrook on Friday 3/21/14.  Both games start at 4:30 p.m.

The Caps junior varsity lost a 9 – 8 home game to Athens Drive on Thursday 3/13/14.  The team rebounded to win 9 – 8 on the road at Wake Forest on Friday 3/14/14.  The team’s season high 9 hits were enough to overcome some shaky defensive play.  Dylan Lamm lead the offense with 2 hits; Jim Woods, John Watters, Duncan Baker and Will Baldwin had RBI’s; and Warren Grady and Elias Kuhns each scored twice.  Will Baldwin was the winning pitcher and Jared Cross recorded the save.
