The Broughton Varsity team travelled to Middle Creek High School to open the 2014 season.  The Mustangs took an early lead before the Caps gamely battled back in the middle innings.  However, the Mustangs put the game out of reach with a big 6th inning and secured the 12 – 2 victory.

Head Coach Harry Jones noted that the lack of pre-season practice time was evident in the team’s performance.  “We need to get better at-bats throughout the line-up and the pitchers need to be more precise with their pitch location”, commented Coach Jones.

Leading hitters for the game were John Baldwin (1 – 3), Rob Case (1 – 3, 2B) and Ben Sawyer (1 – 3).

The Varsity will host Middle Creek for its home opener at Wiley Warren Field on Friday 2/28/14 at 4:00 p.m.

The Junior Varsity team hosted Middle Creek for its home opener on Wednesday.  The Mustangs won the game 6 – 2.  The Junior Varsity travels to Middle Creek on Friday for a 4:00 p.m. game.

We are very close to meeting our goal but we need your help to cross the finish line.

This year at the Trey Cheek Memorial Golf Tournament we announced the Judd Yates Memorial Backstop Project.  Judd was a good friend and teammate of Trey.  Judd passed away last year after a 10 year battle with cancer.  Jenny and Burl Yates have spearheaded a fundraising campaign to replace the backstop at Broughton in Judd’s Honor.  They have raised over $32,000 but they need our help to get the remaining $6000 needed to complete the project.  If we can meet our goal by the end of the year we can completed the work before the start of the 2014 season.  Please make a donation and forward this email to anyone who you think can help.

Please make the checks out to “Broughton Caps Club” with “Judd Yates Memorial Project” in the memo line.

SEASON NOTES FROM COACH JONES

WE INCREASED RUNS SCORED BY 43%, HITS BY 30%, EXTRA BASE HITS BY 40 %.  WE DECREASED OUR ERRORS BY 44% AND CUT OUR ERA FROM 4.2 TO 2.58.  WE WENT INTO THE LAST PLAYING DATE WITH A CHANCE TO SHARE THE LEAGUE TITLE.  THAT SURPASSED MOST OF THE GOALS WE SET AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR.  WE NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PERFORM WITH CONSISTENCY, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE COMPETITION IS TOUGH.  WE FELL SHORT ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE A LITTLE BETTER EXECUTION COULD HAVE MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE.  BUT IT WAS A GREAT GROUP OF YOUNG MEN AND A BIG TURN-AROUND FOR THE PROGRAM.

SUMMER:

WE WILL FIELD 2 TEAMS IN CCSSL (THE HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER LEAGUE), PLAYING 3 GAMES A WEEK UNTIL LATE JULY.  THE OLDER SQUAD WILL INCLUDE VARSITY CANDIDATES FOR 2014; THE YOUNGER SQUAD WILL BE COMPOSED OF INCOMING 9TH GRADERS AND RETURNING JV PLAYERS.

Caps have 4-1 lead going into the 7th. Can’t hang on and lose 8-4 vs Heritage

The Caps played great for six innings. Kriegsman threw strikes, they played defense and had timely hitting.  In the 7th the bullpen failed to throw strikes and when things started to unravel the Caps lost their composure.  Credit to Heritage for executing when it mattered most.

Coach Jones ” As the fates would have it our competition for the conference title also lost.  So we still control our destiny. We need to execute, even when it doesn’t come easy.”

Leading Hitters:White (3-4 2B, RBI), Collins (1-2, RBI)

Coach Jones ” No doubt that our effort against Sanderson was a real setback. But we still control our final position.  We will regroup and go to work.”

BHS made it a game but just ran out of innings.  After a rocky start in the first the Caps dug in their heels and got back in the game.  Final score 6-4

Coach Jones ” We battled but we did not execute well enough in any phase of the game.  Green Hope is a very good team.  We need to raise the bar another notch to build consistency, especially against quality competition.”

Caps had a 4-2 lead after the 5th but could not hold on giving up 2 in the 6th and 2 in the 7th.  Jr Rob Case had a nice day going 3-4 with a double.

Coach Newton ” Yesterday we got off to a good start off a good pitcher and built an earlier lead.  Millbrook did a good job working back into the game and their pitcher got stronger as the game went on.  We have been preaching for two years about finishing strong and yesterday was one of those days where we started well, but we were not able to finish the job.  We are in a tough conference and we have to continue to work hard and get better each day.”
