Caps defeat Wolverines 11-3

Strong pitching, solid defense and timely hitting make for a Caps victory over Wakefield. Noah Yarborough (Sr.) pitched six strong innings scattering 7 hits, and Will Baldwin (Jr.) pitched a scoreless 7th inning. Wakefield scored two in the top of the 1st and Broughton sent 11 batters to the plate and scored 5 runs in the bottom. Dom Ford (Sr.) and John Woods (Sr.) both walked. Baldwin followed with a single to load the bases then Yarborough delivered with a single driving in Ford and pinch runner Warren Grady (Soph.) to tie the game. Baldwin scored on a bases loaded walk, followed by pinch runner Jacob McCaslin who scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Dylan Lamm (Jr.), and Cam Epperson (Jr.) scored the 5th run as Ford walked for the second time in the inning.

In the second inning, Baldwin scored after a Yarborough sacrifice bunt and two wild pitches, Epperson had a stolen base, Mathis Dean (Fr.) singled, and Epperson scored on a pass ball to make it 7-2 Caps. Then a baseball rarity occurred – the Wakefield pitcher went to the wind up and Elias Kuhns (Soph.) stole home on a bang-bang play. 8-2 Caps. In the bottom of the 3rd, Woods singled, Yarborough and Epperson walked, then Kuhns delivered a deep 2 RBI double scoring pinch runners Grady and McCaslin for the second time each. 10-2 Caps. Then you knew it was Broughton’s day. The newly dedicated backstop delivered the assist a fortuitous bounce right back to catcher Woods stopped a Wolverine score. The Caps final run came in the 5th when Ford scored on another RBI single by Woods.
